Emerald City Comicon:2008

This past weekend was the Emerald City Comicon. It's a nice little show that keeps getting bigger. I met a lot of nice people, a couple of strange ones and I got to say "hello" to some old acquaintances. I sketched and sold merchandise the whole time and came out of it with a little bit of cash.

The above sketch (which I just colored for the blog) was one of my favorite ones I did during the whole show. The challenge was to come up with a sound effect and a Kirby-styled monster to fit it. I ended up doing it backwards, as sometimes the characters say things in my head as I create them.

Ahhh...the hidden voices.

One of the surprisingly highlights of the show was the attendance of Juan Giminez, Estabon Marato, Azipiri and Sanjulian. It blew my mind they were there. My buddy Dev looked shell-shock as he was telling me...then I went to see for myself. If you don't now who I'm talking about...Google their names, they're legendary. Through broken English and some hard-earned cash I bought two really excellent sketches from Azipiri and Gimenez. The latter being the first European artist whose work I had ever seen in comics.

The other cool thing is, I donated a painting for a benefit auction and it sold for $150. The auction itself made over $10,000, so...it's nice to be a part of something where you can make a difference. The guy who won the auction was really appreciative to and I'm glad...anything to make people happy.

Wow on both counts!

What a great opportunity to meet and see the work of those masters in person. Nice work on the painting too - it has a very lush feel to it.

Sweet painting. I remember Morato from early Conan comics, and Azipiri draws a pretty mean female...
